The Austin Belly Dance Convention 2019

By Rachel Morris

Gypsy Roulette Dance

The Austin Belly Dance Convention provides the opportunity, for those who may not be able to travel far, to take workshops with instructors from all over the world. They can experience live Middle Eastern music and dance performance from local and international professionals.

It’s kind of like summer camp when you are a kid, only with wine, drums and sparkly costumes.

The convention is filled with beautiful and talented people from all over the world. People you may meet once, you may see each time you go or people you may return to your hometown to share stories and plan your next dance adventure with.

This year I added a bit to my usual experience and applied for 2 performance opportunities.

My application was accepted and I had the opportunity to open the Friday night Gala Show with my troupe mates and friends, Gypsy Roulette Dance, performing a choreography by Monica Arnold.

The rest of the show included incredible performances by Michelle Sorenson (Utah), Devin Alfather, Bahaia, Athena Najat (Turkey), and Stacey Lizette. It was quite an honor to share the stage with such talent.

I also performed in the Saturday afternoon showcase in a collaborative duet with one of my dance sisters, Cindy Moore, as the Wildlings. We were introduced by another wildling, Z-Helene so that too was an honor in my book!

As an ABDC Volunteer, the opportunity to perform was an extremely fun but challenging addition, in that I had to work in practice time, costume, makeup & hair prep while also continuing to check in Vendors and collect Raffle items for the evening shows.

Both performances went very well and I believe we all enjoyed ourselves very much!

In addition to volunteering and performing, I was also able to take two workshops, one with Vanessa Raqs of Cairo covering folkloric elements in a belly dance cocktail and one with Michelle Sorenson covering some of her new and always fascinating fusion combos.

Then like each year before, we all say our good byes, take group photos, do some last minute shopping and pack it all up till next time.

If you have never been to the ABDC I strongly suggest it. Grab a few friends, and take in all the workshops, shopping and shows you can.

Discount room rates are available till they sell out.

And there is always opportunity to be in one of 2 evening shows or afternoon showcases.

I hope to see you at The Austin Bellydance Convention June 26-28, 2020!!The Austin Belly Dance Convention provides the opportunity, for those who may not be able to travel far, to take workshops with instructors from all over the world.
